When you start your KTM engine in the heart of Bulgaria, you are not just entering the wild. You are crossing lands that were home to some of the oldest and richest civilizations in the world—Thracians, Scythians, and ancient Bulgarians. Our enduro tracks pass exactly where the greatest gold treasures of antiquity were discovered.
1. The Rhodopes: The Mountain of Orpheus and the Mystic Thracians
The Rhodopes are more than just technical trails and dense forests. This is the mountain of the legendary singer Orpheus. While riding in the Rhodopes, we find ourselves at the foot of Perperikon—the majestic rock city of the Thracians. This was the site of the famous Temple of Dionysus, where Alexander the Great reportedly received the prophecy that he would conquer the world. The Rhodopes still hide the secrets of Thracian gold that continue to fascinate archaeologists today.
2. Sredna Gora: Home of the Panagyurishte Gold
Sredna Gora is a favorite among enduro riders for its specific terrain, but it is also a hub of Thracian culture. Near Panagyurishte, the world-famous Panagyurishte Gold Treasure was found—6 kg of pure gold with exquisite craftsmanship. On the tracks around Starosel, we pass by massive Thracian cult complexes and temples, reminding us that these trails were once royal roads.
3. The Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina): The Path of Kings and Scythian Warriors
The Balkan Mountains are the backbone of Bulgaria. Along their southern slopes lies the “Valley of the Thracian Kings.” As we climb the steep ridges, dozens of tombs of great rulers like Seuthes III remain beneath us. The Scythians—legendary nomadic warriors—also left their mark here, with golden horse trappings that are masterpieces of ancient art. These mountains were also the fortress of the First Bulgarian Empire, where medieval kings hid their treasures.
